Hidden card skimmer at gas pump or ATM silently steals your card number and PIN

Criminals attach skimming devices over or inside fuel pump and ATM card slots to copy card data, plus a pinhole camera or keypad overlay to capture your PIN. The Secret Service estimates $1 billion in annual losses; skimmers peak every summer road-trip season.

Also known as: gas pump card skimmer, ATM overlay skimmer, deep insert skimmer, fuel pump card fraud, card cloning at ATM

What to do right now

  1. 1 Before inserting your card, wiggle the card slot and look for mismatched hardware — if anything is loose, use a different pump or machine
  2. 2 Use tap-to-pay or chip whenever offered — these defeat most skimmers; only fall back to swipe if you must
  3. 3 Cover your hand when entering a PIN, even at pumps you trust — a pinhole camera above the pad can capture keystrokes
  4. 4 Prefer pumps closest to the station attendant; criminals plant skimmers on isolated pumps far from staff view
  5. 5 If you suspect a skimmer was installed, do not disturb the device — call local police and inform the gas station immediately
  6. 6 Check your bank statements daily during summer travel; dispute any unrecognized charge immediately and ask for a card replacement
  7. 7 Report to the FTC at https://reportfraud.ftc.gov and the FBI's IC3 at https://www.ic3.gov.

Red flags

  • Card reader slot feels loose, wobbly, or a different color or texture from nearby pumps — that mismatch is a skimmer overlay
  • Pump panel is open or the security tape shows 'VOID' — a sign someone opened the pump to install an internal skimmer
  • ATM keypad feels spongy, raised, or slightly thicker than normal — a sign of a PIN-capture overlay
  • You used an unfamiliar pump or standalone ATM in a tourist area or highway rest stop, and within 48 hours suspicious ATM withdrawals appeared elsewhere
  • Your card was never lost or stolen but your bank texted about withdrawals in another city — classic sign of cloned-card use
