Facebook and Instagram ads sell a fake "nationwide" concealed carry permit — the certificate is legally worthless
Facebook and Instagram ads for fake groups like "National Carry Association" sell online certificates for a non-existent nationwide concealed carry permit. Victims pay $200–$4,500 for documents that no state or sheriff recognizes.
Also known as: fake national carry permit, online CCW certificate scam, Freedom Carry scam, National Carry Association scam, Patriot Permit scam, fake federal gun permit ad, nationwide CCW scam
Already happened to you? Do this in the next few minutes
- 1 Call your bank or card's fraud line right now. Use the number on the back of your card — not any number from the message or caller. Ask them to stop or reverse the payment and freeze the account.
- 2 If you paid by gift card, wire, or an app (Zelle, Venmo, Cash App): contact that company immediately and report it as fraud. Acting fast sometimes recovers the money.
- 3 Report to the FBI at ic3.gov and the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov. The sooner, the better.
What to do right now
- 1 Do not pay — no ad on social media can sell you a real concealed carry permit
- 2 Check your state's requirements through your county sheriff or state police official website — those are the only authorities that issue carry permits
- 3 Report the ad to Meta by tapping the three-dot menu on the ad and selecting 'Report Ad'
- 4 If you paid, dispute the charge with your credit card company as soon as possible
- 5 Report to the FTC at https://reportfraud.ftc.gov and the FBI's IC3 at https://www.ic3.gov.
Red flags
- ⚠ No national concealed carry permit valid in all 50 states exists — permits are issued state by state or county by county, and no federal law creates a universal carry permit
- ⚠ Any paid online course promising a permit with no classroom instruction, no live-fire qualification, and no range time is not meeting the legal requirements of any U.S. state
- ⚠ The ad uses patriotic imagery, invokes veterans' benefits, or cites a law you cannot verify independently
- ⚠ AI-generated images or cloned audio of law enforcement officers, elected officials, or celebrities appear in the ad to make it look credible
- ⚠ The website accepts credit card payment for a certificate and emails you a PDF — no legitimate carry permit is issued as an emailed PDF
- ⚠ Price is unusually low ($45–$200) for a 'lifetime' permit, or unusually high ($4,000–$4,500) for a 'premium' federal package
