A farm equipment website you found online is fake — scammers clone real dealerships to steal wire transfers
Scammers clone real farm equipment dealerships online and advertise tractors and machinery on Facebook Marketplace at below-market prices. Wire transfer is required before pickup — equipment never exists and money is unrecoverable.
Also known as: fake farm equipment dealer scam, online tractor purchase fraud, fake agricultural equipment website, farm machinery wire transfer scam, Facebook Marketplace farm equipment scam
Already happened to you? Do this in the next few minutes
- 1 Call your bank or card's fraud line right now. Use the number on the back of your card — not any number from the message or caller. Ask them to stop or reverse the payment and freeze the account.
- 2 If you paid by gift card, wire, or an app (Zelle, Venmo, Cash App): contact that company immediately and report it as fraud. Acting fast sometimes recovers the money.
- 3 Report to the FBI at ic3.gov and the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov. The sooner, the better.
What to do right now
- 1 Inspect all equipment in person before paying anything — any seller who refuses in-person inspection before payment is not legitimate
- 2 Verify the business independently: search the name on BBB.org, call your state's department of agriculture, and check how long the domain has been registered
- 3 Never wire funds for equipment you have not physically inspected — wire transfers are nearly impossible to reverse once sent
- 4 If you have already paid, contact your bank immediately — some wire recalls succeed within the first few hours
- 5 Report to the FTC at https://reportfraud.ftc.gov and the FBI's IC3 at https://www.ic3.gov.
Red flags
- ⚠ Seller demands wire transfer or e-transfer before you can see or inspect the equipment in person
- ⚠ Price is significantly below market value for tractors, combines, loaders, or other farm machinery
- ⚠ When you ask to inspect the equipment first or visit the lot, communication immediately stops
- ⚠ Business name and address appear to be a real residential property — not a commercial farm equipment dealership
- ⚠ The website's domain was registered within the last few months (check domain registration date at a WHOIS lookup tool)
- ⚠ The same phone number appears on fraud-reporting sites under multiple different business names
- ⚠ Equipment photos appear to be stolen from legitimate dealership listings — identical to photos found elsewhere online
