A website offers business or first-class flights at 80% off — it takes your bank transfer and disappears
Fake travel concierge sites advertise business and first-class flights at 50–80% below airline prices, accept payment by bank transfer only, then stop responding. Victims discover no booking exists when they try to check in. Bank transfers have no buyer protection.

Already happened to you? Do this in the next few minutes
- 1 Call your bank or card's fraud line right now. Use the number on the back of your card — not any number from the message or caller. Ask them to stop or reverse the payment and freeze the account.
- 2 If you paid by gift card, wire, or an app (Zelle, Venmo, Cash App): contact that company immediately and report it as fraud. Acting fast sometimes recovers the money.
- 3 Report to the FBI at ic3.gov and the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov. The sooner, the better.
What to do right now
- 1 Before booking, verify the agency's ATOL number at the Civil Aviation Authority register at https://www.caa.co.uk/atol-protection/ — type the URL directly, do not follow a link from the agency's own site
- 2 Always pay by credit or debit card — credit card payments over £100 carry Section 75 protection; debit cards have chargeback rights. Never pay by bank transfer for travel bookings
- 3 Check the company on Companies House at https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk and confirm the trading name, registration date, and registered address match what the site shows
- 4 Search the company name plus the word 'scam' or 'review' before paying — legitimate businesses have an established review trail on Trustpilot, Google Maps, or ABTA
- 5 If you have already paid by bank transfer, contact your bank immediately to report it as a scam — call the number on the back of your card. Some banks can try to recover the funds
- 6 Report to Report Fraud at https://www.reportfraud.police.uk or call 0300 123 2040.
Red flags
- ⚠ The price is 50–80% below what the airline or established travel agents quote — premium cabin seats at these discounts are not commercially viable for a legitimate agent
- ⚠ Payment is required exclusively by bank transfer — legitimate ATOL-protected travel agents accept credit or debit cards, which carry Section 75 or chargeback protection
- ⚠ The company is not listed on the Civil Aviation Authority ATOL register — all ATOL-protected travel agents holding your flight money must be registered
- ⚠ The website looks professional but was registered recently and has few independent reviews on established platforms
- ⚠ Initial enquiries are answered quickly and warmly; communication stops entirely after payment is sent
- ⚠ You receive no ATOL certificate or formal booking confirmation from the airline — only a receipt from the agency itself
- ⚠ The company cannot be found at Companies House, or was registered within the last few months under a name unrelated to its trading name
