Already happened to you? Do this in the next few minutes
Call 1930 now- 1 Call 1930 — the national cyber-crime helpline — right now. The sooner you report, the better the chance of freezing the money before it moves.
- 2 Call your bank to freeze the account and block the card immediately. Use the number printed on your card, never a number from the message or caller.
- 3 File a report at cybercrime.gov.in and keep every message, screenshot, and transaction ID.
What to do right now
- 1 Never accept a screenshot as proof of payment — always verify in your own UPI app (Paytm / PhonePe / GPay) or bank SMS before handing over goods
- 2 Enable UPI sound alerts and push notifications so every incoming credit triggers an alert on your own device
- 3 If a buyer insists on showing only a screenshot, ask them to initiate the payment again while you watch your phone
- 4 For suspicious transactions, note the buyer's face, ask for their mobile number, or use CCTV if available
- 5 If you already handed over goods: file a complaint with the cyber cell of your local police and report at https://cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930 (national cyber helpline).
Red flags
- ⚠ Buyer presents a screenshot on their phone instead of letting you see the payment in your own UPI app in real time
- ⚠ The 'Transaction ID' on the screenshot cannot be found in your Paytm/PhonePe/GPay transaction history
- ⚠ Amount on the screenshot looks correct but no SMS or in-app notification arrived on your phone
- ⚠ Buyer is in a hurry and pressures you to accept the screenshot, especially at peak busy hours
- ⚠ Screenshot may show your UPI ID but the transaction date or time is implausible (wrong day, late night)
Known variants
-
FakePaymentGenerator app variant: buyer uses an app (FakePaymentGenerator, MokeePay, or similar) that produces a pixel-perfect Paytm/PhonePe/GPay success screen with custom amount, receiver UPI ID, and a fake transaction ID. Apps are free or cheap on Telegram channels. Detection: the fake transaction ID will not appear in any UPI reconciliation.
