AI deepfake of your face used to bypass video-KYC and open loans in your name

Fraudsters trick you into a video call — fake job interview, dating match, or unsolicited caller — recording your face movements to build an AI deepfake. They pair it with stolen Aadhaar to open fraudulent loans or bank accounts in your name.

Also known as: deepfake KYC fraud, AI face clone bank account fraud, video KYC identity theft India, Aadhaar deepfake loan scam, liveness detection bypass fraud

What to do right now

  1. 1 Lock your Aadhaar biometrics immediately at uidai.gov.in or via the mAadhaar app — this blocks all e-KYC and biometric authentication until you unlock it
  2. 2 Never allow a stranger to direct your face during an unsolicited video call — blinking, turning, or speaking on command to an unknown caller is handing over liveness data
  3. 3 Check your credit report (CIBIL, Experian, or CRIF) for any account or loan opened in your name that you did not apply for
  4. 4 If a fraudulent loan appears, write to the lender's nodal officer with your complaint number from the cybercrime portal — lenders are required to investigate Aadhaar-based fraud claims
  5. 5 Do not share your Aadhaar number, date of birth, or PAN with anyone over an unsolicited video call or chat link
  6. 6 Report at https://cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930 (national cyber helpline).

Red flags

  • Unsolicited video call instructs you to look at a specific screen point, blink slowly, or turn your face side to side — these are liveness-check harvesting commands
  • An 'online job interview' or 'account verification' call is conducted on an unfamiliar platform and asks you to hold up your Aadhaar card or PAN while facing the camera
  • You receive an OTP, welcome letter, or loan approval SMS from a bank or NBFC you never approached
  • Your CIBIL score drops suddenly or a new credit enquiry appears that you never authorised
  • Your Aadhaar consent history (uidai.gov.in) shows authentication or e-KYC transactions you never initiated
  • An EMI deduction appears in your bank statement for a lender you don't recognise
