"Your Vinted item sold — verify your bank account" message leads to a fake page that drains your account

Scammers message new Vinted sellers within minutes of their first listing, claiming an item sold and requesting bank account verification via an external link. The link leads to a fake Vinted payment page that steals card or banking credentials. IDCARE confirmed 130+ Australians caught up in this campaign.

Also known as: Vinted seller scam Australia, fake Vinted payment verification Australia, Vinted bank account verify scam, marketplace seller phishing Vinted

What to do right now

  1. 1 Check your Vinted app's Sales tab directly — if the item does not show as sold there, no purchase has been made
  2. 2 Never click any external link to verify your bank account or receive payment — all legitimate Vinted payments are processed entirely within the app
  3. 3 If you entered banking credentials or card details on a linked page, call your bank's fraud line immediately — the number is on the back of your card or in the app
  4. 4 If you approved a one-time code or a banking app prompt on the linked page, that authorisation may already have moved money — call your bank straight away and do not wait
  5. 5 Report the scammer's Vinted account to Vinted via the app's Report function and forward any suspicious messages to [email protected]
  6. 6 Contact IDCARE (1800 595 160 or idcare.org) if you provided identity information — they offer free support to Australian victims
  7. 7 Report to Scamwatch at https://www.scamwatch.gov.au/report-a-scam or ReportCyber at https://www.cyber.gov.au/report.

Red flags

  • ⚠ You receive a message immediately after listing an item on Vinted saying it has already sold and you need to verify your bank account to receive payment
  • ⚠ The message links to an external website — not the Vinted app — where you are asked to enter card numbers, banking credentials, or approve a transaction
  • ⚠ The sender may display 'Vinted' in the username or profile name, but is not Vinted's official support channel inside the app
  • ⚠ Vinted itself never asks sellers to verify bank account details via SMS, email, or any link outside the app
  • ⚠ The page may look identical to Vinted's real design, including logos and colours
  • ⚠ After submitting details, you may be asked to approve a one-time code or 2FA prompt — approving it authorises a real payment out of your account
  • ⚠ The fake buyer may have 'purchased' your item at your listed price with no questions — an unusually quick sale from a new account is a warning sign
